The first step I recommend in designing the framework for your business may be something new to most of you who are reading this. It’s called a Mind Map and is an excellent way to brainstorm to spark the imagination and Dream BIG!
People are filled with ideas and dreams, but many are not sure how to translate those into a successful business plan that turns entrepreneurial passion to business profits. Transitioning into entrepreneurship or changing course in business can create confusion and overwhelm.
Mind Mapping provides a new way to re-think, re-organize, and re-invent your business strategies to stand out in today’s challenged environment. By using every function of the brain along with visual clarity and stimulation, Mind Mapping provides the creative edge needed to succeed in today’s economy.
A Mind Map helps you create an image or picture that will trigger new ideas and help organize the chaos and confusion that often gets us stuck in the planning or designing phase of a project. In short, it is the best tool I know of to break through overwhelm into real clarity.
What is a Mind Map?
A Mind Map is a graphical way to represent ideas and concepts starting with a centralized theme. It is a visual creative tool that uses both the left and right brain to bring together analytical thinking with creative artistry, resulting in a richer, more engaging process of planning, note taking, organizing ideas and designing projects. Because of the radial design of a Mind Map, it tends to resemble more the way the brain naturally works, which enhances creativity, promotes clarity, sharpens focus, expands the mind, and provides a visual picture to work from.
The power of a Mind Map lies in its simplicity. The flexibility of a Mind Map lies in its many purposes in every area of our life, education, and business. It can be used for simple everyday tasks, like ‘to do’ lists, or something as complex as creating a comprehensive business plan, planning a major event, and creating applications and software. It is used in brainstorming, problem solving, note taking to improve retention and recall through association, and organizing complex ideas.
You can use pictures, images, or words to convey an idea…in fact mixing it up will promote even more creativity. Taking your ideas and communicating them in to one or two words on a branch creates clarity. Trust me, your creative thought and intuition will be enhanced through the use of Mind Mapping.
Each individual step of your marketing funnel, as well as the overall plan for your system development, could have a Mind Map as part of the brainstorming process. I invite you to explore some of the mind map software I mention below and have some fun with it. Start by putting every thought down and continue to work with it until a clear master plan begins to emerge. Feel free to edit along the way, too. As you work on your system components, ideas will come to you that you can add to the picture. In fact, that’s the whole purpose of Mind Mapping…to create ideas and translate them into a simple, yet powerful, visual image.
Mind Map Tools
There are some excellent tools available for the exercise. I personally use IMindMap by Tony Buzan. Their software allows you to draw freehand in vibrant colors, utilize their organic designs, go linear and grayscale for a corporate look, and collaborate online worldwide. You can also do 3D presentations and use it from a variety of platforms, including mobile, iPad and your laptop or desktop. I prefer it because of the brilliant color features it offers, since using color can actually enhance your creativity. They offer a free 7 day trial of the software. From there they offer a one time, multiple option, package purchase to get started.
Another tool used by many I know is Mindmeister which starts as a free tool for up to 3 maps, with options for upgrading if you plan to use it more. There is an annual fee to continue usage.
Both platforms allow global collaboration, and both work with mobile applications, so explore and see what works best for you, your budget, and personal design preferences.
FreeMind is another free open source software application that many people get started with.
For those who want the experience of working with a very robust system, PersonalBrain acts more like a visual information manager than a mind map. PersonalBrain helps you organize all your Web pages, contacts, documents, emails and files in one place and immediately access that data with a simple keyword search! If overwhelm is something you struggle with, this software will certainly make your life and business easier to manage.
When you work with me, you will be using Mind Mapping extensively as you begin the planning phase of launching your business to help you create your business vision, develop your strategies, design your systems, plan product launches, produce info and training products, design your website or blog, brainstorm content for posts, video, and presentations, plan events…the list goes on as your ideas expand. There really isn’t any function of your business that wouldn’t benefit from using Mind Mapping as part of the process. And it makes what could be tedious and overwhelming a fun, creative process. It is the best way I’ve experienced to breakthrough chaos to clarity.
